Issued to mark the United Nations Decade for Women (1976–1985), this coin was part of a broader wave of commemorative silver struck by developing nations under the UN program — many produced specifically for the collector export market rather than domestic circulation. Tanzania's economy in 1984 was under severe strain following the costly 1978–79 war with Uganda and the subsequent collapse of the East African Community, which left the Tanzanian shilling in prolonged crisis. Coins like this one were effectively foreign-exchange instruments dressed as commemoratives.
