100 Shilingi Conservation

Tanzania's 1986 conservation series was part of a broader FAO and WWF-aligned push across African central banks to issue commemorative coinage raising awareness of endangered species and habitats. The Bank of Tanzania was among several institutions that participated under soft pressure from international development frameworks active in the region during that decade — funding tied to conservation programs sometimes came with expectations of public-facing campaigns, coins among them.

KM#18 is not rare, but survivors in unimpaired condition are less common than mintage figures suggest, largely because the copper-nickel composition proved susceptible to spotting in equatorial humidity.
