Tanzania's shift to brass-plated steel for this denomination in the early 1990s was a direct response to the cost of maintaining nickel-clad coinage during a period of chronic balance-of-payments stress — the same pressures that had pushed the shilling to a fraction of its 1967 founding value by independence-era standards. The plating on circulated examples tends to flake at the rim first, a known characteristic of the type that dealers use as a wear proxy.
