Thomas De La Rue printed this series throughout the mid-1980s, a period when Somalia's government was increasingly dependent on foreign aid and printing banknotes abroad on credit was a practical necessity. The Central Bank's domestic monetary management was deteriorating sharply by the late 1980s — inflation accelerated, and the shilling's real purchasing power collapsed well before the state itself did in 1991.

The P#35 series ran across six issue years, which is unusually long for a denomination caught in that kind of inflationary spiral. Notes from the earlier dates in the run circulated hard; later dates much less so, as the denomination became progressively less useful in daily transactions.
