The Somali National Bank was established in 1960 following unification of the former British and Italian Somaliland territories, and the shilling series it issued through the 1970s reflects the Siad Barre government's push to consolidate a centralized monetary identity after the 1969 coup. By 1975, Somalia was formally aligned with the Soviet Union, and the state apparatus — including its banknote program — was being run with that political backing.
Thomas De La Rue continued printing Somali notes through this period despite the ideological shift, a not unusual commercial arrangement. The single watermark security feature was modest even by the standards of the time, and the series is known to have circulated heavily in both urban and rural markets where note condition deteriorated quickly in the coastal humidity.
