The Battle of Dürnkrut (1278) decided the fate of Central Europe more consequentially than almost any medieval engagement on the continent — Rudolf of Habsburg defeated and killed Ottokar II of Bohemia on the Marchfeld plain, ending Přemyslid ambitions over Austria and establishing Habsburg control over the duchy that would anchor their dynasty for the next six centuries. The coin marks the 700th anniversary of that battle.
Austria's commemorative schilling program of the 1970s used a .640 silver alloy rather than the finer silver of earlier issues, a cost-driven decision made as silver prices climbed through the decade.
