Rudolph I secured Habsburg dynastic power at the Battle of Marchfeld in 1278, defeating Ottokar II of Bohemia in one of the largest cavalry engagements of the medieval period. The victory effectively handed the Habsburgs control of Austria, Styria, and Carniola, territories they would hold — with interruptions — for over six centuries. This coin was struck in the final year of Austria's commemorative silver 100-Schilling series before the format was retired in favor of the 500-Schilling denomination.
