Otto Nicolai is remembered primarily as the founder of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra in 1842, though the Austrians took long enough to claim him — he was Prussian-born and spent much of his career in Rome and Vienna on alternating contracts. He died in Berlin in 1849, just two months after conducting the premiere of his opera Die lustigen Weiber von Windsor, the work that finally secured his reputation.
