The Innviertel issue commemorates the 200th anniversary of the region's transfer from Bavaria to Austria under the Treaty of Teschen in 1779 — a diplomatic settlement brokered by France and Russia to resolve the War of the Bavarian Succession without a decisive military outcome. Austria had invaded Bavaria claiming inheritance rights; what it ultimately received through negotiation was a wedge of territory between the Inn and Salzach rivers that remains Austrian today.
This is part of Austria's long-running commemorative 100-Schilling silver program, which ran from 1974 through the euro transition and leaned heavily on regional history for its subjects.
