Obverse description Three-quarter-length portrait of Emperor Maximilian I of Mexico (1832–1867) facing slightly left, depicted in full military dress uniform adorned with epaulettes, a broad sash, and an elaborate chain bearing a prominent cross decoration. The field to the left carries the legend REPUBLIK ÖSTERREICH in stylized lettering, with the denomination 100 SCHILLING and the date 1997 below; the engraver's initial H appears adjacent to the date. Along the right rim, the name MAXIMILIAN and his birth and death years 1832–1867 are inscribed vertically in the field.
