Herman Johannes was a pioneering Indonesian engineer and politician from East Nusa Tenggara who served in the early Sukarno-era parliament and became rector of Gadjah Mada University. His appearance in the 2016 national hero coinage series reflects Bank Indonesia's broader effort that year to replace the long-running regional flora and fauna designs with portraits of designated pahlawan nasional — a politically loaded category formally awarded by presidential decree.
