The PRRI — Pemerintah Revolusioner Republik Indonesia — was not a separatist fringe movement but a rival government, declared in February 1958 in Bukittinggi, West Sumatra, by senior military and civilian figures who had broken with Sukarno's Jakarta administration. Sjafruddin Prawiranegara, who signed this note, had previously served as governor of Bank Indonesia and was the man who ran the emergency Republican government during the Dutch military actions of 1948–49 — his signature carries real institutional weight.
Notes were printed locally under wartime conditions, with the PRRI controlling significant territory across Sumatra and Sulawesi before Indonesian Army operations progressively collapsed the rebellion by mid-1958. Most surviving examples show circulation wear consistent with a short active period under difficult field conditions.
The rebellion was formally over by 1961, its currency never recognized beyond the territory it briefly controlled.
