Bank of India's travellers cheques occupied an unusual position in the Indian financial market — the institution was nationalised in 1969 under Indira Gandhi's bank nationalisation ordinance, which brought fourteen major commercial banks under state control, and the Bank of India travellers cheque programme subsequently operated under that government-owned umbrella rather than as a private financial product.
