The State Bank of India traces its institutional lineage to the Bank of Calcutta, founded in 1806 — making it one of the oldest banking institutions in Asia. The Mumbai Main Branch, housed in the neoclassical building on Madam Cama Road, was the Imperial Bank of India's Bombay headquarters before SBI absorbed the Imperial Bank network following the State Bank of India Act of 1955.
