Vidyasagar Maharaj was one of the most revered Digambara Jain ascetics of modern India, known for reviving the near-extinct tradition of Digambara monastic discipline after taking diksha in 1968 under Acharya Gyanasagar. He walked barefoot across India for decades, eating only once per day from cupped hands, and never used any vehicle, electricity, or modern convenience — a strict adherence to the Digambara code that made him exceptional even within his own tradition. He passed away in February 2024 through Santhara, the Jain practice of voluntary fasting unto death, at Chandragiri Hill in Chhattisgarh.
This commemorative followed within roughly a year of his death, an unusually rapid turnaround for an Indian commemorative issue of this type.
