Annadurai), the eminent Tamil statesman and former Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, occupies the central field, rendered in low relief with a facsimile of his signature below the portrait. A circular legend surrounds the design, with bilingual inscriptions reading 'PERARIGNAR ANNA CENTENARY' in Latin script and 'पेरारिज्ञर अन्ना जन्मशती' in Devanagari along the upper periphery. The commemorative birth and death years '1909–1969' appear along the lower rim, flanking the portrait. |

Perarignar ("Great Scholar") was the honorific attached to C. N. Annadurai after his death in 1969 — the Tamil Nadu chief minister whose funeral drew what was then one of the largest recorded crowds in human history, estimated at over fifteen million people. This 2009 issue marked the centenary of his birth. The .500 fineness is characteristic of Indian commemorative silver from this period, when the Reserve Bank consistently chose debased alloy over fine silver for collector releases.
