Mohammed Rafi died in July 1980, and the Indian government's reluctance to issue commemorative coinage for film personalities meant decades passed before any such recognition materialised. This coin marks the centenary of his birth in 1924 in Kotla Sultan Singh, a village in undivided Punjab — now Pakistan. The choice of a .500 fine silver alloy rather than a higher standard is consistent with India's modern commemorative program, which has used quaternary silver since the 1990s to control bullion costs while maintaining the denomination's ceremonial weight.
