India assumed the G20 Presidency on December 1, 2022, and held it through November 2023 — the first time the country had held the role. The New Delhi summit in September 2023 produced the African Union's admission as a permanent G20 member, a genuinely consequential outcome. This commemorative was issued by the Government of India Security Press at Nashik to mark the presidency year.
The .500 fine silver specification is consistent with India's post-1964 commemorative coinage policy, which moved away from higher-fineness issues largely for cost reasons.
