Issued to mark the centenary of Homi Jehangir Bhabha's birth, this commemorative was released by the Reserve Bank of India as part of a broader series honoring figures central to India's post-independence scientific development. Bhabha founded the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research in 1945 and later chaired the Atomic Energy Commission of India, effectively building the country's nuclear program from nothing. He died in the 1966 Kangchenjunga air disaster near Mont Blanc — a crash that has never been entirely free of conspiracy speculation, given the timing and his role in India's nuclear ambitions.
