Bhupen Hazarika — composer, singer, filmmaker, and Assamese cultural figure — received the Bharat Ratna posthumously in 2019, and this issue follows the Indian commemorative silver program's established pattern of honoring recent Bharat Ratna recipients in coin form. The .9999 fineness is a deliberate step above the .500 and .800 silver used in earlier Indian commemoratives, a shift the Reserve Bank introduced to align these pieces more explicitly with the collector and bullion market rather than nominal circulation.
