C. Subramaniam served as Union Minister of Agriculture during the Green Revolution of the 1960s, and is widely credited — alongside M. S. Swaminathan — with spearheading the policy decisions that brought high-yielding wheat and rice varieties to Indian farmers at scale. The 2010 issue marks the centenary of his birth. India's commemorative rupee program has produced dozens of similar silver pieces since the 1960s, and the .500 fineness used here is characteristic of the post-liberalization commemorative series rather than any earlier sterling standard.
