World Food Day was established by the FAO in 1979 and first observed on October 16, 1981 — the anniversary of the organization's founding in 1945. Nepal's commemorative issue arrived the following year, part of a broader wave of national mints responding to the FAO's call for member states to mark the occasion through currency programs. The KM#850.2 designation distinguishes this from a related variety, the difference lying in the edge treatment.
