The P#112 series was introduced in 2018 as part of the Mahatma Gandhi New Series, a wholesale redesign of Indian banknotes rolled out in the aftermath of the November 2016 demonetization — one of the most disruptive currency events in modern monetary history, which invalidated roughly 86% of all cash in circulation overnight. The ₹100 denomination was among the last in the series to be updated, with new notes not reaching circulation until late 2018.

Printed entirely domestically by SPMCIL, the series reflects India's long-term policy of reducing dependence on foreign security printers — a shift that accelerated significantly after 2006.
