The P#44 series marked a significant reworking of the Mauritian note programme in the late 1990s, with Thomas De La Rue retaining the contract they had held for Mauritian currency through much of the post-independence period. The 1998 dating places this note squarely in the period before the 2001 issue introduced upgraded security features — the watermark-only specification here looks sparse by comparison with what followed almost immediately after.
The Maraye/Gujadhur signature combination is specific to a narrow window of issue, making it the most reliable dating anchor for this note beyond the printed year.
