Bradbury Wilkinson printed the P#71 series during a politically charged stretch for Ceylon — the mid-1960s saw the country oscillate between Sirimavo Bandaranaike's socialist administration and Dudley Senanayake's UNP government, each with distinct economic policies that kept the Central Bank under considerable pressure. The 100 Rupee denomination was the highest in circulation, making this note the workhorse of large transactions at a time when import controls and foreign exchange restrictions defined daily commerce.
New Malden was Bradbury Wilkinson's primary security printing facility, and their intaglio work on Ceylon notes from this period is among the finer output of the series. The single watermark security feature reflects the relatively modest anti-counterfeiting expectations of the era — Ceylon would not upgrade to more complex security architectures until the following decade.
