Indian Railways was founded in 1853 when the first passenger train ran 34 kilometres between Bombay's Bori Bunder and Thane — a line built and operated by the Great Indian Peninsula Railway under British colonial administration. By the centenary in 1953, the network had already been nationalised following independence and consolidated into a single state-owned entity. The 150th anniversary fell under the Vajpayee government, which commissioned this issue through the Security Printing and Minting Corporation of India.
The .500 fineness is notably low for a commemorative silver coin, a recurring characteristic of Indian commemoratives from this period rather than an anomaly specific to this issue.
