Seychelles marked a decade of independence from Britain in 1986 with a series of commemorative silver issues, of which this is the principal denomination. The islands had gained independence on June 29, 1976, ending over 160 years of British colonial administration — though the political landscape shifted almost immediately when France-Albert René overthrew founding president James Mancham in a coup just one year later, in 1977, while Mancham was attending a Commonwealth conference in London.
René remained in power through 1986 and beyond, meaning this anniversary coin was issued entirely under his government.
