Additional information

Piedfort issues from the Maldives Monetary Authority are uncommon in any series; this particular strike, commemorating disabled persons, aligns with the International Year of Disabled Persons declared by the UN in 1981, a campaign that prompted a wave of commemorative coinage from smaller issuing authorities throughout the early 1980s. The MMA was established only in 1981, making this among its earliest piedfort outputs.

Piedforts of this type were produced in strictly limited quantities, primarily for collector sets and diplomatic distribution rather than any circulation purpose.
