Transnistria's existence as a coin-issuing authority is itself the anomaly — an unrecognised breakaway state that declared independence from Moldova in 1990 following a brief armed conflict, yet has operated its own central bank and numismatic program for decades. No UN member state recognises Transnistrian sovereignty, which makes every official issue from the Republican Bank a curiosity of international law as much as of numismatics.
