Transnistria occupies a strip of territory between the Dniester River and the Ukrainian border that declared independence from Moldova in 1990, a conflict that produced a brief but bloody war in 1992 before a Russian-brokered ceasefire. The state remains unrecognized by any United Nations member. Its coins are issued by a central bank of a country that, legally speaking, does not exist.
The Transnistrian Republican Bank has used commemorative silver issues partly as hard-currency instruments, since the circulating rouble holds no convertibility outside the region.
