The New Hermitage — the public museum building distinct from the older Winter Palace complex — was commissioned by Nicholas I and completed in 1852, making it one of the first purpose-built public museums in the world. German architect Leo von Klenze designed it, though construction was supervised locally by Vasily Stasov and Nikolai Yefimov. This coin was part of Russia's early-2000s push into large-format silver issues, where the 1-kilogram format allowed engravers to work at a scale impossible on circulation coinage.
