Yuri Dolgorukiy — the 12th-century Suzdal prince credited with founding Moscow in 1147 — became a focal point of Soviet and post-Soviet civic mythology. The equestrian monument in Tverskaya Square was erected in 1954, a Stalinist-era gesture of civic pride that placed him directly opposite the Moscow city government building. This coin was issued as part of Russia's sustained effort through the 1990s to rebuild national identity through commemorative programs while the country was simultaneously navigating currency collapse and institutional reorganization.
The 1997 date places it squarely in the redenomination year, when the ruble was rebased 1000:1.
