Issued the same year the Bolshoi underwent its first serious structural assessment, which would eventually lead to the controversial six-year closure beginning in 2005 for a complete reconstruction. The renovation cost exceeded 21 billion rubles and generated significant public dispute over the integrity of the restoration work and alleged misappropriation of funds.
