Transnistria — the narrow strip of territory between the Dniester River and the Ukrainian border — declared independence from Moldova in 1990 but remains unrecognized by any United Nations member state. The Transnistrian Republican Bank issues collector coinage partly as a revenue mechanism and partly as an assertion of institutional legitimacy that diplomatic channels have never granted. This zodiac series piece from 2005 belongs to that effort.
