The Armed Forces of South Russia, under Denikin's command, issued this note as part of a parallel monetary system that competed — badly — with Bolshevik sovznaki and a dozen other local currencies simultaneously circulating across the former empire. By 1919, southern Russia was awash in paper from at least four or five distinct issuing authorities, and ordinary commerce required constant improvised exchange rates between them.
Denikin's government printed in large quantities to cover military expenditures, and inflation eroded purchasing power rapidly. The series is common in circulated grades precisely because so much was produced and so little was worth saving when the White Army collapsed in early 1920.
