This issue belongs to a series the Bank of Russia launched in the early post-Soviet period partly as a hard-currency revenue mechanism — gold bullion-quality commemoratives sold at premium to foreign collectors while domestic purchasing power had collapsed. The ballet theme was deliberate: Bolshoi prestige was one of the few cultural assets the new Russian state could market internationally without political complication.
The .999 fineness places it above the older Soviet gold coinage standard, a quiet but meaningful technical departure from Tsarist and Soviet-era norms.
