Belarus issued this note in 1991 as the republic moved toward monetary independence from the Soviet Union, though it predates the formal introduction of the Belarusian ruble as an independent currency — these early transitional issues circulated alongside Soviet roubles during a period of acute monetary confusion. Hyperinflation hit Belarus severely through the mid-1990s, and 100 roubles — a meaningful denomination at issue — became essentially worthless within a few years, driving rapid successive redenominations.
