Petrozavodsk, the capital of the Republic of Karelia, was founded in 1703 by Peter the Great as an ironworks complex supplying cannon and ammunition for the Great Northern War against Sweden. This coin was issued as part of Russia's long-running series commemorating cities of military glory and historical significance — a program that accelerated considerably in the early 2000s under renewed state interest in imperial-era founding narratives. The 300th anniversary of the city's establishment provided the occasion.
