Pyotr Ivanovich Panin served as commander during the 1770 siege of Bender — the Ottoman fortress on the Dniester that the Russian Empire took after brutal fighting. Transnistria's claim to that history is contested by Moldova, which controls neither the territory nor the narrative. These silver commemoratives issued by the Transnistrian Republican Bank carry no recognition from any UN member state, making their legal tender status an assertion rather than a fact.
