Aanvullende informatie

Bendery (also spelled Bender) sits on the west bank of the Dniester and was the site of fierce fighting during the 1992 Moldovan-Transnistrian war — the fortress itself briefly changed hands during some of the conflict's most violent urban combat. Transnistria's commemorative silver program has functioned partly as a soft-power exercise, issuing collectible coinage that implicitly asserts territorial and historical legitimacy for a state unrecognized by any UN member.

The fortress dates to Ottoman construction in the 16th century and later hosted Charles XII of Sweden after his defeat at Poltava in 1709.
