Ekaterinodar — now Krasnodar — was the administrative capital of the Kuban People's Republic, and this note was issued during the extraordinarily volatile period when the city changed hands multiple times between Volunteer Army and Bolshevik forces. The Ekaterinodar branch produced its own obligations precisely because supply lines from Moscow and Petrograd had collapsed entirely, and local commerce demanded something functional.
The S-prefix in the Pick reference signals a "Special" regional issue — South Russian in this case — distinguishing it from the main State Bank series. Notes from this branch often show uneven ink distribution due to improvised printing conditions.
