Transnistria declared independence from Moldova in 1990 following a brief armed conflict in 1992, but remains unrecognized by any United Nations member state. The Cathedral of the Archangel Michael in Rybnitsa, a city on the Dniester's eastern bank, was reconstructed after Soviet-era destruction.
