Additional information

Transnistria declared independence from Moldova in 1990 following a brief armed conflict in 1992, but remains unrecognized by any United Nations member state. The Transnistrian Republican Bank issues collector coinage in part to assert institutional legitimacy — a coin bearing a bank's name and a denomination implies a functioning sovereign monetary system, even where none is formally recognized. The Cathedral of the Archangel Michael in Rybnitsa, a city on the Dniester's eastern bank, was reconstructed after Soviet-era destruction.
