Reverse description A stylised architectural rendering of the Annunciation Cathedral of the Moscow Kremlin occupies the upper portion of the field. Below the cathedral, three monumental deësis icons are depicted: the central image of Christ the Saviour is flanked to the left by the Virgin Mary and to the right by St. John the Baptist, all executed in the style of Theophanes the Greek. Surrounding the icons, scenes of ancient Russian life are rendered in low relief on either side. The inscription ФЕОФАН ГРЕК (Theophanes the Greek) is engraved along the lower portion of the field, attributing the iconographic programme to the celebrated Byzantine-Russian master.
