The Alexandrov series honors the city of Alexandrov in Vladimir Oblast, which served as Ivan the Terrible's de facto capital during the Oprichnina period from 1564 to 1572 — a time when Ivan effectively abandoned Moscow and ran a parallel court and terror apparatus from the Alexandrovskaya Sloboda. The Bank of Russia's bimetallic collector program has used this denomination and format since the mid-1990s to document historically significant Russian cities, with the silver-and-gold construction reserved exclusively for the flagship 100-rouble issues in that series.
