Tiraspol was founded in 1792 as a Russian military fortress during Catherine the Great's push to consolidate control over the territories seized from the Ottoman Empire following the Russo-Turkish Wars. The city's 210th anniversary fell just over a decade after the Transnistrian War of 1992 — a brutal five-month conflict in which Tiraspol served as the de facto capital of the breakaway Moldovan territory that had declared independence in 1990. That war never formally ended; the ceasefire left Transnistria in a political limbo it still occupies.
The Pridnestrovian Republican Bank began issuing commemorative coinage partly to assert institutional legitimacy for a state unrecognized by any UN member.
