The RSFSR's 1922 currency issues appeared during the Soviet government's New Economic Policy, when the Bolsheviks temporarily reintroduced limited market mechanisms to stabilize an economy in freefall after years of war, revolution, and the disastrous "War Communism" period. Sovznaki — the generic Soviet paper money of the early 1920s — were being printed in such volume that inflation had rendered earlier denominations nearly worthless, forcing the constant issue of higher face values.
Pick 133 belongs to a transitional moment: within a year, the chervonets reform would begin replacing the collapsing sovznak system entirely.
