| Additional information |
Qatar's first oil shipment departed in 1949, when the Anglo-Persian Oil Company — later BP — exported the initial cargo from Umm Said. The 2009 commemorative marks sixty years from that moment, issued during a period when Qatar was aggressively positioning its sovereign wealth and currency institutions as independent actors on the global financial stage, having only established the Qatar Central Bank under that name in 2006.
KM#89 was struck in a relatively small commemorative run, as is standard for Qatari silver issues of this period — the Central Bank has never published comprehensive mintage figures for its commemorative series.
