Qatar's first proper banknote series — this being the highest denomination — was issued by the Qatar Monetary Agency shortly after the country established its own currency following independence from Britain in 1971. The QMA replaced the Qatar and Dubai Currency Board, which had itself only existed since 1966, meaning Qatar cycled through three distinct issuing authorities in under a decade.

Bradbury Wilkinson handled the printing from their New Malden works, a firm with deep roots in colonial and post-colonial currency production across the Gulf and beyond. The series was short-lived; the QMA was superseded by the Qatar Central Bank in 1993, and these early notes were withdrawn well before that transition completed.
