Qatar Central Bank's 1996 series was the third definitive issue for an independent Qatari currency, following the earlier Qatar and Dubai rival notes and the first purely Qatari issues of 1973. By the mid-1990s, Qatar's rapid expansion of LNG infrastructure demanded a credible, professionally secured currency series — De La Rue was the logical choice, having printed earlier Qatari issues as well.
The security specification here is notably minimal for the period. A basic watermark and single security thread, with no microprinting or color-shifting ink, reflects mid-1990s Gulf standards rather than any particular cost decision.
